A Black Dress and a Birthday

There is just something I love about a birthday photo session, and this one did not disappoint. Celebrating her 40th birthday, my client showed up in the most beautiful black dress and paired it with a gorgeous hat that immediately reminded me of the classy, elegant women of the 1940s—complete with a delicate veil. The entire look was timeless, feminine and effortlessly chic. But as beautiful as she looked, it was her radiant smile that really brought these photos to life. She was full of joy, and you could feel it in every frame.

Full-length portrait in a black mermaid-style dress with tulle skirt and a wide-brimmed hat with a veil, smiling on a quiet tree-lined road

Arms open wide, dancing joyfully in a black dress on a tree-lined road

And then the session gave us a little unexpected splendor. A gentleman happened to drive by in the coolest vintage car, stopped, and graciously allowed us to use it for a few photographs. Of course we did! The car paired with the black dress and vintage-inspired hat took the whole look to another level, and the images came out so cool and editorial. Sometimes the best moments during a photo session are the ones you could never plan. A beautiful woman, a beautiful black dress, a milestone birthday—and a little vintage-car serendipity. I loved everything about this one.

Before I Say Goodbye to Summer…

Before I completely trade summer for cooler days, cozy layers and everything fall, I wanted to leave a little piece of the season here.

These are some of my favorite photographs from summer—the light, the colors, the warmth…all of it. I love these images too much to let the season change without giving them a permanent home here on The TRP Journal.

    So, no long story today.
Just a few beautiful photographs of my model, Marcy, from a season I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to.

Sitting on a wooden stool in front of a rustic barn
Standing in a golden field, hand resting in her hair
A quiet, close moment among hay bales and weathered wood

    Until next summer… ❤️
